What's important to know is that “true” contractions are seen in women who are in labor and about to give birth. You may not be a part of the healthcare profession but there are signs and symptoms you could easily recognize if what you're feeling is the real thing or not. Women who are usually in labor would feel an intense tightening or cramp-like sensation not only over the abdominal are but also at the lower back, as opposed to “false” contractions wherein the tight sensation is only felt in the abdomen. But more often than not, most people won't recognize the difference due to the discomfort. What you can do is drink sips of water and lie on the bed on your right side for at least twenty to thirty minutes, and if the contractions persist, this should alert you that you are already experiencing premature labor.

During pregnancy, the cervical and vaginal walls produce extensive secretions that form a plug-like substance that block the vagina and cervix, preventing gynecologic-related infections reaching the fetus. When the woman begins to labor, this mucus plug normally is expelled from the vagina along with other secretions and some blood. But how do you know if it's already the mucus plug or just the normal discharges you experience? More often than not if your vaginal discharge is excessive than normal, mucus plug has probably been expelled from the birth canal.

Bleeding

Spotting of blood is actually normal during pregnancy. However, when bloody discharge become excessive than usual it usually indicates preterm labor or other serious conditions like Abruptio Placentae and Placental Cord Prolapse, which is dangerous not only for the unborn child but to the mother as well.

And those are the signs of preterm labor. Keep in mind that prompt medical treatment is needed to keep the mother from delivering the baby too early. One should be alert to these signs because premature labor and delivery is both risky and dangerous to the mother and the fetus.
